Subject-Verb Combinations (S+V)

Don't let extra words in a sentence confuse you about which subject and verb go together.

Longer Explanation:
Certain types of phrases often go between a subject and the verb it goes with, so you need to learn to recognize those phrases.
  • Prepositional phrases:
    The tree outside my window has a nest in it.  
    S+V = tree has
  • Appositives:
    Her dog, a bull mastiff, looks ridiculous with a pink bow stuck to its head.
    S+V = dog looks
  • Infinitive phrases:
    He loves to bake cookies and cakes.
    S+V = He loves
  • Participial phrases:
    His dad, after hearing the entire story, decided to make his punishment relatively light.
    S+V = dad decided
  • Adverbial phrases:
    She very quietly went downstairs to get some cookies as a midnight snack.
    S+V = She went​
