Use Practice 1 & 2  to learn the concept before doing the Quiz.
You only get one chance on the quiz, so practice as many times as you need.

Quick Tip:
  • In a "what if..." or "you'd better..." situation, use the verb tense that doesn't sound right.

Longer Explanation:
  • Use "subjunctive mood"
    • when something isn't true but you're imagining what things would be like if it were true
    • when someone is insisting or strongly requesting that you do something
  • To do it, use the plural form of the verb (the spelling that would normally go after the word "we").
  • If the subject of a "you'd better" clause is "we," subjunctive uses "be" instead of "are" or "were."
Examples:
  • If I was/were you...
    • I'm not you, so use the plural form, "were."
  • If he was/were my son...
    • He's not my son, so use the plural form, "were."
  • Her boss insisted that she sell/sells 30 items a day.
    • The boss is insisting, so use the plural form, "sell."
  • They requested that we are/be here early.
    • The subject of the "you'd better" clause is "we," so use "be."
