Quick Tip:
A semicolon is just like a period, except you don't capitalize the next word.

Longer Explanation:
  • One way to connect two INDEPENDENT clauses is with a semicolon (S+V ; S+V).  
    My brother just got a new job; he's going to be a skydiving instructor.
  • Don't use FANBOYS after a semicolon.
    Wrong: Skydiving looks fun; but it's also very dangerous.
  • It is okay to use another connecting word and then a comma, like these:
    • ; however,
    • ; therefore,
    • ; consequently,
    • ; in fact,
