Grades for Your Research Paper


Printed Paper (120 points):
  • 40 points for Content
    • strong reasons (yours & theirs)
    • strong research/support
    • effective rebuttal
    • interesting introduction & conclusion
    • appropriate length (E9 = 1.5 pages, E10 = 2.5 pages,
      H11 = 5+ pages)
    • If the content isn't original, you can lose up to 20 points.  This would be if you copied too much of other people's idea (even if you gave them credit) and/or if your typed copy is too different from your hand-written versions.  Like we've talked about many  times, the idea isn't to compile a bunch of things that other people said; it's to write what you  think and then find facts that support it.
  • 40 points for Organization
    • thesis statement
    • topic sentences
    • re-statement of thesis
    • coherence within paragraphs  [Everything in a paragraph
      is related to its topic sentence.]
    • logical flow of paragraphs
  • 20 points for Writing style 
    • transitions
    • flowing v. choppy
    • sentence variety
  • 20 points for the Works Cited page
    • -1 point for each mistake, up to 20 points
    • -5 for no "print" source [See "Requirements" for your class.]
Notecards:
  • 2 points for each card
  • The source cards don't count if they're not actually used in the paper.
  • E9 & E10 (38-52 points)
    • 12-15 fact cards
    • 3-5 source cards
    • 4-6 "one reason" cards
  • H11 (60-78 points)
    • 20-25 fact cards
    • 5-8 source cards
    • 5-6 "one reason" cards
