Explanation:
  • "It's" has two meanings:
    - "It is" (like "It's going to rain today.")
    - "It has" (like "It's been a long time.")
  • "Its" shows that something belongs to or goes with "it," just like his, hers, yours, etc.  See how they all end with the s sound but DON'T have an apostrophe?

So if you're not sure, just say "it is" or "it has" when you see "it's" or "its" and see if the sentence makes sense.
