Honors English 9 Vocabulary - Fall 2020

Here are our new Vocab procedures, starting with List #5:
  1. Click on this week's list below.
  2. LOG IN to StudyStack.
  3. By this Friday, complete three of the activities at the bottom AND take the "Test" (one of the buttons at the bottom).  I won't record this grade until you do three activities and the Test.  If you don't get them finished by this Friday, it's too late.
  4. If you don't get at least 90% on the test, do it again until you do.

List #5 Animal Farm, chapters 1-5

List #4 ("Life of Pi")
  1. advice = a suggestion
  2. advise = to give a suggestion
  3. breath = (noun) air going in and out of your lungs
  4. breathe = (verb) to take air into your lungs and out again
  5. envelop = (verb) to surround completely
  6. envelope = like you put a letter in
  7. lead = (1) to be in charge; (2) a type of metal
  8. led = past tense of "lead"
  9. pray = to ask for help or offer praise
  10. prey = to hunt for food
  11. irresolvable = impossible to solve
  12. predatory = inclined to prey on others
  13. adversary = enemy or opponent
  14. willful = stubborn
  15. remarkable = extraordinary
  16. proposition = a suggested plan
  17. capacity = ability, potential
  18. onslaught = a violent attack
  19. deliberate = on purpose (after thinking about it)
  20. sentient = able to feel things

List #3 ("American History")
  1. beside = next to
  2. besides = in addition to
  3. bored = not having fun
  4. board = a piece of wood or a group of people
  5. brake = make something stop
  6. break = damage something
  7. cereal = what many people eat for breakfast
  8. serial = coming one after another
  9. eager = excited about what's going to happen
  10. anxious = worried about what's going to happen
  11. anticipate = expect something to happen
  12. infatuated = very strong but short-lived "love"
  13. enthralled = very interested in something
  14. devoted = very loving or loyal
  15. elation = excited happiness
  16. impulse = a sudden and strong desire
  17. elaborate = very fancy
  18. forbidden = not allowed
  19. prodigy = a very talented child
  20. accompany = go with someone

  1. accept = receive something  [verb]
  2. except = not including
  3. access = the right/ability to use something or go somewhere​
  4. excess = more than enough
  5. affect = to make a difference [verb]
  6. effect = result/change [noun]
  7. assure = promise something will happen
  8. ensure = make sure something happens
  9. insure = repay you if something bad happens
  10. apparently = ​the way it looks on the surface
  11. dissecting = cutting apart
  12. distinguished = professional; deserving respect
  13. civilians = people who aren't soldiers or law enforcement officers
  14. colleagues = people you work with
  15. inevitably = in a way that can't be stopped
  16. initiate = start
  17. modification = change (usually small)
  18. phenomenon = event; activity
  19. surfacing = coming to the top
  20. theoretically = the way it's supposed to work

  13. circulating = going around
  14. encountered = found
  15. enhance = make better, improve
  16. havoc = destruction
  17. inoculate = treat someone with a vaccine
  18. mutate = change
  19. pathetic = pitiful, awful
  20. replicate = make an exact copy
