English 10 Vocabulary - Fall 2020

Here are our new Vocab procedures, starting with List #5:
  1. Click on this week's list below.
  2. LOG IN to StudyStack.
  3. By this Friday, complete four of the activities at the bottom of the StudyStack page, INCLUDING the "Test."  I won't record this grade until you do three activities and the Test.
  4. If you don't get at least 90% on the test, do it again until you do.

  1. advice = a suggestion
  2. advise = to give a suggestion
  3. breath = (noun) air going in and out of your lungs
  4. breathe = (verb) to take air into your lungs and out again
  5. envelop = (verb) to surround completely
  6. envelope = like you put a letter in
  7. lead = (1) to be in charge; (2) a type of metal
  8. led = past tense of "lead"
  9. pray = to ask for help or offer praise
  10. prey = to hunt for food
  11. gregarious = sociable, outgoing
  12. incident = an event (sometimes negative)
  13. stealthily = secretly
  14. tentative = uncertain
  15. intimidating = scary
  16. fastidious = overly concerned about details
  17. disagreeable = unpleasant
  18. spectacle = something you look at (often bad)
  19. audible = able to be heard
  20. preposterous = ridiculous, crazy

  1. beside = next to
  2. besides = in addition to
  3. bored = not having fun
  4. board = a piece of wood or a group of people
  5. brake = make something stop
  6. break = damage something
  7. cereal = what many people eat for breakfast
  8. serial = coming one after another
  9. eager = excited about what's going to happen
  10. anxious = worried about what's going to happen
  11. spacious = having lots of room
  12. unvoiced = not spoken out loud
  13. obscure = difficult to see or understand
  14. recessed = set back a little
  15. muffled = made quieter or softer
  16. turmoil = great confusion or disorder
  17. conservative = traditional
  18. profitable = making money or other advantages
  19. paternal = related to a father
  20. dexterity = skill, especially with your hands​

  3. access = the right/ability to use something or go somewhere​
  4. excess = more than enough
  5. affect = to make a difference [verb]
  6. effect = result/change [noun]
  7. assure = promise something will happen
  8. ensure = make sure something happens
  9. insure = repay you if something bad happens
  10. hue = a particular shade of a given color
  11. commence = begin
  12. diminish = become smaller or less important
  13. devise = plan or invent
  14. impasse = a dead end
  15. expend = use up, consume
  16. self-reliant = able to do things on your own
  17. ultimate = surpassing all others
  18. integrate = combine or connect things
  19. counterpart = someone that has the same position or function but in a different place
  20. anonymous = nameless

  17. inoculate = treat someone with a vaccine
