Class Research
Part 1
Part 1
- Lead a class discussion over the topic ("free" college), agreeing on an opinion and coming up with at least one reason.
- Project a document on-screen and compose a topic sentence (should + one reason) as a class.
- Guide students to formulate research questions, still on the projected document.
- Assign two specific questions to each student, overlapping so that two research each question. For example, student 1 does #1 & 2, student 2 does 2 & 3, student 3 does 3 & 4, and so on, circling back to question #1.
- They must verify each fact with at least two sources.
- They put their answer(s) AND the sources in the Class Comments box on GC. - Guide the class to write the paragraph on paper, basically copying what I project on the screen (but they can vary it a little). Be sure to include in-text citations.
- Lead a discussion to come up with another reason.
- Follow steps 2-5 again, but this time the students will write the paragraph as a class. I'll call on individuals to add a sentence, and I'll project what they compose; everyone should copy it but can vary it a little. Be sure to include in-text citations.
- Lead a discussion to come up with a third reason.
- Follow steps 2-5 again, but this time each student will write their own paragraph. Tell them to include in-text citations.
- Lead a discussion to come up with a few reasons to take the other side of the issue (counter-argument).
- Follow steps 2-5 again, but this time I'll help them compose the sentences with appropriate transitions, signal words, etc. Be sure to include in-text citations.
